Specific environments make one more likely to encounter dangers and accidents than others. Ideally, we should avoid these areas, but this is impractical for many people. Some individuals have careers working at these dangerous locations – and someone must have to. Having jobs working in mines, shipyards, railroads, and oil rigs is necessary for society to run.
While many people choose to work here, it doesn’t mean that they do not have any rights to compensation. When accidents happen, they must seek the compensation they rightfully deserve.
What is oil rigging?
Oil rigs are the large platforms that obtain the oil or natural gas we need for society to run. These platforms have isolated locations fitted with facilities allowing workers to live there 24/7. These platforms require around-the-clock monitoring and have a lot of heavy machinery.
There are many different types of rig which vary in how they function and where they stand. Some other types of oil rigs located offshore include:
- Fixed Platforms
Fixed directly to the seafloor, these large structures are permeant and made of steel or concrete.
- Tension Leg Platforms
As opposed to fixed platforms, these designers tether tension leg platforms to the seafloor via vertical tension. This model allows structures to float.
- Compliant Towers
Tall, slender, and flexible structures, compliant towers support a drilling deck and facilities
- Semi-Submersibles
Semi-submersibles have buoyant halls, letting them float like a boat. Their design allows for easy transport.
- Spars
Spars are comparable to tension leg platforms, only using a traditional mooring system. Types of spars include; convention spar, truss spar, and the cell spar.
- Drillships
As the name suggests, drillships are sea vessels meant for both exploring and drilling.
- Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading Systems
These ship-like vessels house processing facilities and usually remain at a location for extended periods.
- Jack-Up Rigs
Also known as Mobile Offshore Drilling Units, these moveable platforms have legs that allow them to raise or lower as needed.
What are oil rig accidents?
Oil rig accidents are an umbrella term referring to virtually anything that could go wrong at these locations. It can refer to instances where the machinery itself causes problems due to the nature of work (such as getting into an accident during a shift).
Oil rig accidents also cover the unfortunate incidences on the property when you are off the clock. Slipping and falling on the location and acquiring severe injuries is not your fault (whether you trip on your way to your shift or fall in your private quarters). It’s important to remember to record any formal medical bills you have and seek legal counsel at once.
